Research & Ethics Statement

Advanced Computation Laboratory (ACL) exists to advance the state of knowledge and technology through research, engineering and innovation.

We believe that scientific discovery, secure computing and responsible automation have the potential to improve lives, strengthen institutions and expand humanity's understanding of the world. Our goal is to develop technologies that are both technically excellent and socially beneficial.

As we pursue this mission, we recognise that powerful technologies carry responsibilities as well as opportunities.

Scientific Integrity

ACL is committed to intellectual honesty, evidence-based decision making and rigorous engineering standards.

We strive to:

  • Follow the scientific method wherever appropriate.
  • Evaluate ideas based on evidence rather than ideology.
  • Remain open to criticism, review and revision.
  • Distinguish clearly between established knowledge, working hypotheses and speculation.
  • Prioritise reproducibility and transparency whenever possible.

We believe progress depends upon curiosity, critical thinking and a willingness to challenge assumptions.

Security by Design

Many of ACL's projects involve distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, cryptography and advanced computational technologies. Security is therefore not an afterthought but a foundational design principle.

We seek to:

  • Build systems that minimise unnecessary trust assumptions.
  • Protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging cybersecurity risks.
  • Adopt industry best practices wherever appropriate.
  • Prepare for future challenges, including advances in artificial intelligence and post-quantum cryptography.

The security of our users, partners and stakeholders remains a core priority.

Responsible Innovation

We recognise that technological progress can have both intended and unintended consequences. For this reason, ACL aims to consider the broader impact of its work before deploying new technologies.

We seek to develop systems that:

  • Enhance human capability rather than diminish it.
  • Support accountability and transparency.
  • Promote resilience and reliability.
  • Respect privacy and individual rights.
  • Encourage lawful and ethical use.

We will not knowingly develop technologies intended primarily to facilitate unlawful activity, fraud, exploitation or harm.

Artificial Intelligence

We believe artificial intelligence represents one of the most significant technological developments of the modern era.

AI has the potential to accelerate scientific discovery, improve productivity and solve previously intractable problems. However, it also introduces important questions relating to accountability, safety and governance.

ACL supports the responsible development of AI systems and seeks to build infrastructure that encourages:

  • Verifiability
  • Auditability
  • Security
  • Human oversight
  • Robust governance

Where AI systems are incorporated into our products and services, we will seek to do so in a manner consistent with these principles.

Research for the Public Good

ACL supports research that contributes positively to society.

Our long-term interests include:

  • Scientific Computing
  • Fundamental Physics
  • Cybersecurity & Cryptography
  • Distributed Systems
  • Cloud Infrastructure
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Advanced Engineering
  • Computational Modelling

We believe that expanding humanity's collective knowledge is a worthwhile endeavour and that technology should serve as a tool to support that objective.

Independence & Objectivity

ACL values independent thinking and objective analysis.

We strive to ensure that commercial interests do not compromise scientific integrity or engineering quality. While we actively pursue commercial opportunities, we remain committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism, honesty and technical excellence.

Continuous Improvement

Technology evolves rapidly, and ethical challenges evolve with it. For this reason, ACL views ethics not as a fixed checklist but as an ongoing process of learning, reflection and improvement.

We regularly review our practices, assumptions and priorities to ensure that our work remains aligned with our mission and values.

Our Commitment

ACL is committed to building technologies that are secure, useful and intellectually honest.

We believe the future will be shaped by those willing to combine scientific curiosity, engineering excellence and ethical responsibility.

Our aim is not simply to build new technologies, but to build technologies worthy of trust.
